Dr. John M. Hanson, distinguished professor emeritus of civil engineering and construction at NC State University, has been elected an honorary member by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). An honorary member is a “person who has attained acknowledged eminence in some branch of engineering or in the arts and sciences related thereto, including the fields of engineering education and construction.”
According to the citation on his award, Hanson is “honored for outstanding achievements as a researcher, practicing engineer and educator and for inspiring leadership of major international engineering societies,” the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE). Hanson will receive his award at the ASCE annual meeting in October.
Hanson received his bachelor’s in civil engineering from South Dakota State University in 1953, his master’s in structural engineering from Iowa State University in 1957 and his doctorate in civil engineering from Lehigh University in 1964. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 1992.
