Dr. Hans Conrad, professor emeritus of materials science and engineering at North Carolina State University, was elected Fellow of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) in June 2002. TMS grants this award to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to materials science and technology.
Conrad joined the College of Engineering faculty in 1981. During his tenure at North Carolina State University, his appointments included department head of materials science and engineering and director of the minerals and materials engineering programs. Just prior to joining NC State, he was professor of materials science, chairman of the Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science Department, and associate director of the Institute of Mining and Minerals Research at the University of Kentucky.
His research interests include electrorheology; erosion; microelectronic packaging; metal deformation processes; effects of electric fields and currents; and crystal structure, defects and physical and mechanical properties. A February 11, 2002, story about Conrad’s research on the effects of electrical fields on ceramics and metals appears at http://www.engr.ncsu.edu/news/news_articles/electric_field.research.html.
TMS honored Conrad with an earlier award in 2000. In that year he received the TMS Structural Materials Division Distinguished Scientist Award.
Conrad received his bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering in 1943 from Carnegie Institute of Technology, his master's degree in engineering metallurgy in 1951 from Yale University, and his doctoral degree in engineering metallurgy in 1956 from Yale University.
One criterion of the fellowship award is that there will be no more than 100 fellows at any time. Conrad is the third faculty member in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering to receive this honor. Dr. Jagdish Narayan, Distinguished University Professor, and Dr. Carl C. Koch, professor, are also Fellows of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society.
