Dr. Benny D. Freeman, professor and associate department head of chemical engineering at North Carolina State University, received the 2001 Project of the Year award from the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP).
Freeman’s project, a joint effort between NC State and Membrane Technology and Research, Inc. (MTR), focused on the use of nanostructured, self-assembled block copolymer coatings to markedly prolong the lifetime of membranes used to purify wastewater aboard naval vessels.
The award was presented by Dr. James Decker, acting director of the Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy, at the annual SERDP symposium held November 27.
