Dr. Salah E. Elmaghraby, University Professor of Operations Research and Industrial Engineering at North Carolina State University, received the Frank and Lillian Gilbreth Industrial Engineering Award from the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) at the IIE Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon, in May. This award is one of three that NC State's Department of Industrial Engineering received from IIE this year.
This award is the highest honor presented by IIE and “recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves through contributions to the welfare of humankind in the field of industrial engineering.” The contributions must be of the highest caliber and be nationally or internationally recognized. Only one award is given annually.
Elmaghraby has been on the faculty at NC State since 1967. His research interests include design and operation of production systems, project planning and scheduling, discrete optimization and dynamic programming. He received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1954 from Cairo University, his master’s degree in industrial engineering in 1955 from The Ohio State University and his doctorate in industrial engineering in 1958 from Cornell University.
