Dr. Xiuli Chao, a professor of industrial engineering at North Carolina State University, traveled to Beijing in November to speak at the International Forum on Medium- and Long-Term Development Planning for China’s Science and Technology.

Chao was among a select group of international experts invited by the Chinese government to present their views on how that country can best develop and sustain technological growth in the future. More than 500 top Chinese scientists and government officials attended the forum, and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and other top government officials held private meetings with individual presenters to discuss their ideas.

The list of presenters included William G. Wells, former science advisor for presidents Clinton and Bush Sr.; two Nobel Laureates; and chief scientists from Germany, Russia, Korea, Japan and Canada.

In his presentation, “Increasing International Competitiveness of Chinese Industry,” Chao suggested China should form research and science parks that focus on innovative research and development, and create a culture of total quality management to encourage production of highest quality products.
