Dr. Susan M. Blanchard, professor of biological and agricultural engineering at North Carolina State University, has been elected Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), effective January 1, 2003.  Blanchard was selected “for contributions in the field of cardiac electrophysiology and for innovations in biomedical engineering education.”

Blanchard, who joined the NC State faculty in 1993, was instrumental in establishing a bachelor of science in biomedical engineering at NC State, a program that began in 2001.  Her research interests include biological engineering applications of the electronic nose, including food freshness and safety, and analysis of cardiac electrograms recorded during ventricular fibrillation.

She is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and a senior member of the Biomedical Engineering Society.  She received the NC State University Outstanding Teacher Award in 2000, the IEEE Third Millennium Award in 2000 and the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Service Award in 1998.

Blanchard received her bachelor’s degree in biology in 1968 from Oberlin College.  She was awarded her master’s degree in 1980 and her doctoral degree in 1982, both in biomedical engineering from Duke University.
