High School Students Learn About Nuclear Technology at NC State
A group of 25 high school students participated in the two-week
Nuclear Science and Technology program conducted this summer by
the Department of Nuclear Engineering at North Carolina State University.
Students from across the country attended lectures, visited laboratories
and participated in research projects conducted by nuclear engineering
faculty, technical staff and graduate students.
Additionally, students learned about the department's PULSTAR
reactor, Scaled Pressurized Water Reactor Facility, Neutron Activation
Laboratory and Plasma/Fusion Facilities.
"I've always been interested in engineering," says Noriko Satake,
a rising senior at Hickory High School in Hickory, North Carolina.
"I've learned a lot from the interaction with the professors, and
I have enjoyed helping with the research projects and being with
other students who are interested in science. This [program] makes
me feel like I know something that others don't know."
Supported by CP&L, Duke Power, Virginia Power and the American
Nuclear Society, the program ran from June 22 to July 3. The annual
camp is open to rising seniors who demonstrate an aptitude for science
and engineering and rising juniors who have taken advanced science
and math courses.
"I hadn't decided on a major before I came to the program, but
now I am focusing toward engineering," says Penny Thomas, a rising
junior at Spanish River High School in Boca Raton, Florida. "I've
learned a lot in the past week."
Listed by county and state, the students and their high schools
are as follows.

Miller Named Associate Dean for Distance Education and Information
Technologies
Dr. Thomas K. Miller III, assistant dean for information technology
and engineering computing services, has been named associate dean
for distance education and information technologies for the College
of Engineering at North Carolina State University. The promotion
was recently announced by Dr. Nino A. Masnari, dean of the College
of Engineering.
"The College of Engineering at NC State has long been a leader
in distance education technology, and our distance education enterprise
is becoming increasingly important to NC State University and to
the state of North Carolina," said Masnari. "It is essential that
we have strong, enlightened leadership in developing and maintaining
our capability for delivering distance education courses throughout
North Carolina and beyond. Dr. Miller will provide the necessary
vision and leadership to advance our distance education program."
A professor of electrical engineering who joined the NC State
faculty in 1982, Miller has been a leader in the development of
distance education technologies. Most recently, he and a team of
engineers designed a program to offer real-time interactive classes
on the Internet using a Virtual Classroom environment built using
Multicast Backbone (MBone) technology and the North Carolina Research
and Education Network (NCREN) data network. As a result of their
efforts, NC State's College of Engineering in 1996 became the first
in the state to offer an interactive distance education class in
real-time over the Internet.
A Kinston native, Miller is a member of the Academy of Outstanding
Teachers at NC State, the IEEE Computer Society, the Communications
Society and the American Society of Engineering Education. He lives
in Raleigh with his wife, Trish, and their two children.

NC State Engineer Chairs International Conference
More than 450 university, industry and national laboratory researchers
from 29 countries converged on Raleigh in June to attend the 25th
Anniversary Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
International Conference on Plasma Science. The conference was hosted
by NC State University and chaired by Dr. John Gilligan, professor
of nuclear engineering and associate dean for research and graduate
programs in the College of Engineering.
During the four-day event 460 poster and oral papers were presented
by specialists in plasma science. Dr. Duncan Moore, associate director
for technology for the White House Office of Science and Technology
Policy, presented an invited lecture emphasizing the need to use
technology to solve complex societal problems.
In addition, the discovery of charged particle flows in interstellar
space was announced by Anthony Peratt, scientific adviser to the
U.S. Department of Energy and plasma researcher at Los Alamos National
Laboratory. The discovery comes after decades of speculation over
whether electricity exists on the scale of hundreds of thousands
of light years in the space between stars.
Other conference highlights included the demonstration of a new
generation plasma flat-panel display that will replace conventional
CRT tubes for television and computer applications.
Plasma is ionized gas that makes up about 99 percent of the mass
of the universe, mostly in the form of stars and interstellar gases.
Lightning and neon signs are common earthly forms of plasma. However,
the conference attendees were more interested in plasma applications
such as intense microwave generation, lighting and electronic materials
fabrication.
The conference was sponsored by the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Science
Society.

NC State Engineer Wins International Award
The American Society for Metals (ASM) International announced
recently that Dr. Jagdish "Jay" Narayan, of Raleigh, Distinguished
Research Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at NC State
University, is the recipient of the 1999 ASM Gold Medal. The award
recognizes Narayan for his pioneering contributions in the area
of laser processing of novel and advanced materials.
The Gold Medal is the highest honor for scholarly achievements
awarded to ASM International members. ASM is the largest materials
society with approximately 55,000 members worldwide.
Narayan's research focuses on laser and plasma processing of materials,
atomic-scale characterization and modeling of defects and interfaces,
high-temperature superconductors, diamond and diamond-like materials,
thin films and superhard materials.
Narayan joined the NC State faculty in 1984 after working as a
senior scientist and group leader for Oak Ridge National Laboratory
for 12 years. He received his master's degree in 1970 and his doctoral
degree in 1971 from the University of California, Berkeley, and
his bachelor's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur,
India, all in materials science and engineering. He has published
more than 650 technical papers, edited 8 books and holds 15 patents.
