July Pride of the Wolfpack Award Winners Announced

July “Pride of the Wolfpack Award” winners in the College of Engineering are Sandra Bailey, Alice Mundia and Roger Russell. Bailey, graduate secretary in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, epitomizes the role of graduate secretary, taking care of all major and minor issues related to the graduate program. Mundia, contracts and grants information processing specialist for the College of Engineering, is a team player who handles her work load with a helpful attitude. Russell, laboratory manager in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, was invaluable during the move to Engineering Building I, coordinating the laboratory moves for two departments.

Reception Held for Winners of IEEE Design Competition

The Senior Design Center (SDC) in the Department of Computer Science at North
Carolina State University will hold a reception on Thursday, August 25, from
3 to 5 p.m. to celebrate a student team victory in the sixth annual IEEE Computer
Society International Design Competition (CSIDC) World Finals held in June.

NC State’s Aerial Robotics Club Wins International Recognition

The Aerial Robotics Club from NC State University
took third place in the third annual Student Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Competition,
hosted by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI). The
event was held June 30 through July 3, 2005, at the Webster Field Annex, Patuxant
Naval Air Station, Maryland.

NC State Student Team Takes First Place in IEEE CSIDC World Finals
|

A multidisciplinary student team from the Senior
Design Center in the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State
University won the $20,000 first-place prize in the sixth annual IEEE Computer
Society International Design Competition (CSIDC) World Finals held in Washington,
D.C., June 27 through 28, 2005. Team members are David Coblentz (BSCSC
’05), Dakota Hawkins (BSCSC ’05), Jonathan Lewis (BSCSC ’05), and Ben Noffsinger
(junior, Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences). This is the first team from
the United States to win this competition since it began six years ago.

June "Pride of the Wolfpack Award" winners in the College of Engineering are Michael Albright, Frankie P. Medlin and Melissa Seate. Albright, administrative secretary in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, demonstrates exemplary professionalism as he expedites tasks and assists others. Through her ingenuity and leadership skills, newcomer Medlin, advising assistant in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, made the December 2004 graduation ceremony the best one yet. In February Seate was promoted from an accounting clerk position to contracts and grants manager in the Department of Computer Science. For several months she had to work both positions and did so while ensuring that the office ran smoothly.

Conte Elected Chair of the ACM Special Interest Group on Microarchitecture

Dr. Thomas M. Conte, professor
of electrical and computer engineering and director of the Center for Embedded
Systems Research at North Carolina State University, has been elected chair
of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special
Interest Group on Microarchitecture (SIGMICRO) for a three-year
term.
The ACM SIGMICRO promotes the advancement of
computer microarchitecture with special emphasis on "features permitting instruction-level
parallelism and their related implications on compiler design." The group
provides several forums for disseminating information, including an online newsletter
and conferences such as the annual MICRO conference.
Conte also chairs the IEEE Computer Society Technical
Committee on Microprogramming and Microarchitecture. He is editor in chief
of the Journal of Instruction-Level Parallelism and is as an associate
editor of the Association
for Computing Machinery (ACM) Transactions on Embedded Computer Systems and ACM Transactions on Architecture and
Compiler Optimization.
Conte received his Ph.D. degree in electrical
engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1992. He
joined the NC State faculty in 1995.

Cheng Receives Fulbright Scholar Award

Dr. Jay J. Cheng, associate professor of biological and agricultural engineering, has received a prestigious Fulbright Scholar grant to conduct research at the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy in Sofia, Bulgaria during 2005-06 academic year. Cheng's research project explores anaerobic fermentation of organic wastes for renewable energy production.

Nuttle and Smith Named IIE Fellows

Two faculty members in the Department
of Industrial Engineering at NC State University have been named Fellows of
the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE). Dr. Henry L. W. Nuttle, emeritus
professor of industrial engineering, and Clarence L. Smith, lecturer and assistant
department head of industrial engineering, were recognized for their distinguished
service and leadership qualities at the IIE Annual Conference in Atlanta May
15.

Chao Receives Distinguished Research Award from the Institute of Industrial
Engineers

Dr. Xiuli Chao, professor of
industrial engineering and operations research at North Carolina State University,
received the Dr. David F. Baker Distinguished Research Award from the Institute
of Industrial Engineers (IIE) at the IIE annual conference in Atlanta in May. This
award recognizes those who have made “significant contributions to the advancement
and progress of the industrial engineering profession through outstanding research
activity.”

May “Pride of the Wolfpack Award” winners in the College of Engineering are Martha Brinson, Elaine Hardin, Russ O’Dell, John Royal, Linda Smith and Gary Weinberg. Brinson, director of communication for the College, helped make the Engineering Building I dedication a success. Hardin, administrative assistant in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, works to keep departmental functions running smoothly. O’Dell, director of development for chemical and biomolecular engineering in the NC State Engineering Foundation Inc., coordinated the official dedication ceremony for Engineering Building I. John Royal, specialist for building construction and management for the College, balances his efforts between Centennial Campus and North Campus engineering buildings to make sure that construction and daily maintenance run smoothly. Smith, administrative assistant for the Office of Academic Affairs, handles an increased administrative workload with a positive attitude. Weinberg, tutorial coordinator and academic advisor in the Office of Academic Affairs, provides a very approachable presence for undergraduate students seeking help.

Libraries Collection Manager for Engineering Wins ASEE Award

Orion Pozo, collection manager for engineering for NCSU Libraries, was awarded the 2002 Homer I. Bernhardt Distinguished Service Award from the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). The award recognizes contributions to the development of excellence in engineering libraries. Pozo works with engineering faculty and graduate students to build and update the libraries holdings.
