Maggie Linak, Park Scholar and chemical engineering and applied mathematics undergraduate at NC State University, was inducted into the 2002 YWCA Academy of Women in the category of Teen Woman at the 20th annual ceremony held November 14. Founded in 1983, the YWCA Academy of Women is an honorary society that recognizes local women who have demonstrated commitment to the community and to the YWCA mission of empowering women and eliminating racism.
Linak was one of ten inductees this year and is the only teenager. She was selected for her community service work with Spanish-speaking families, the Women’s Center of Wake County and the Girl Scouts. She instituted an after-school tutoring program to help Spanish-speaking families, started a book drive and collected more than 500 books for a community center and created a computerized inventory system as a volunteer for the Women’s Center. Linak is active in the Pines of Carolina Girl Scout Council and is a Girl Scout Gold Award recipient.
Linak joins an impressive group of Academy of Women inductees that includes Chancellor Mary Anne Fox, who was inducted in 2001, and Dr. Christine Grant, associate professor of chemical engineering at NC State, who was inducted in 2000.
