College of Engineering Spring 2006 Awards Announced

Awards were presented at the annual spring faculty meeting. The following awards were announced at the May 10, 2006, spring faculty meeting for the College of Engineering.

Department of Biomedical Engineering

Elizabeth G. Loboa, 2005 Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award, Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU).

Roger J. Narayan (tenure-track appointment with UNC-Chapel Hill), Faculty Early Career Development Award, National Science Foundation, and Young Investigator Award, Office of Naval Research.

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

Carol K. Hall, named Camille Dreyfus Distinguished University Professor.

Saad Khan, 2006 Alumni Association Distinguished Graduate Professor.

Richard J. Spontak, Board of Governors’ Award for Excellence in Teaching, College of Engineering, and the 2006 Award for Cooperative Research in Polymer Science and Engineering, American Chemical Society (ACS) Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE).

Gregory N. Parsons, Fellow, American Vacuum Society (AVS).

George W. Roberts, Alcoa Foundation Distinguished Engineering Research Award, 2006.

Orlin D. Velev, selected to receive a Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award by the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation and inducted into the Academy of Outstanding Teachers, NC State University.

CBE Students

Robert (Robby) Odell Moorefield, the 2005-06 Mulkey-Shelton Leadership Scholarship recipient.

Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering

Leonhard E. Bernold, Fulbright Senior Specialists grant, University College Dublin.

Paul D. Cribbins, inducted into the N.C. Transportation Hall of Fame.

Roberto Nunez, Academy of Outstanding Faculty Engaged in Extension, NC State University.

Paul Zia, honored for lifetime achievements, American Concrete Institute (ACI).

Department of Computer Science

Annie I. Antón, named to the NSF CISE [Computer & Information Science & Engineering] Advisory Committee; received the Women of Influence award, 2005 Executive Women’s Forum sponsored by CSO (Chief Security Officer) Magazine; and was elected to a three-year term on the Computing Research Association (CRA) Board of Directors.

Donald L. Bitzer, inducted into the Consumer Electronics Hall of Fame, by the Consumer Electronics Association, for his efforts in advancing television technology.

Xiaosong Ma, Faculty Early Career Development Award, National Science Foundation and Early Career Primary Investigator Award, US Department of Energy. 

Laurie Williams, named to the Academy of Outstanding Teachers.

Cisco Systems has selected NC State as one of just five universities nationally to participate in their National Cisco Internet Generation Scholarship (NCIGS) program. Cisco plans to award two annual scholarships to underrepresented NC State CSC undergraduates (minorities and/or women).

CSC Student Awards:

Students from the Senior Design Center, Department of Computer Science (Dakota Hawkins, David Coblentz, Ben Noffsinger, and Jonathan Lewis; team mentors Ms. Margaret Heil and Dr. Robert Fornaro), took first place in the Sixth Annual IEEE Computer Society International Design Competition World (CSIDC), IEEE.

Daniel A. Reed (CSC adjunct), appointed to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), the White House.

William "Will" Beers (senior, double majoring in Computer Science and Mathematics) awarded the inaugural Charles W. Kelly / Raleigh ISSA Scholarship.

Kera Bell (Computer Science Ph.D. candidate), recognized with an Academic Achievement Award, Association for the Concerns of African American Graduate Students (ACAAGS).

Travis Breaux (CSC Ph.D. student), awarded the Cisco Systems Information Assurance Scholarship for the Fall 2005 semester and was awarded the prestigious 2006 IBM PhD Fellowship Award.

Nathaniel Horner, the College of Engineering 2005 Senior Award for excellence in the humanities.

Sarah Smith (CSC graduate student), awarded the prestigious 2006 IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Award.

David Wright, (PhD student), named one of the Junior Research Ethics Fellows for 2005-2007, by the Research and Professional Ethics Program.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Douglas W. Barlage, Faculty Early Career Development Award, National Science Foundation.

Do Young Eun, Faculty Early Career Development Award, National Science Foundation.

Paul D. Franzon, Alcoa Foundation Distinguished Engineering Research Award 2005 and named Fellow, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Alex Q. Huang, Fellow, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Sarah A. Rajala, appointed chair of the North Carolina Mining Commission by Governor Mike Easley.

Michael B. Steer, Lampe Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (first to hold this title).

Cecilia W. Townsend, the George H. Blessis Outstanding Undergraduate Advisor Award.

Wenye Wang, Faculty Early Career Development Award, National Science Foundation.

Eta Kappa Nu chapter, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Outstanding Chapter Award from the National Eta Kappa Nu organization.

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) student chapter, Exemplary Student Branch Award, IEEE headquarters, with the award signed by Michael Lightner, the IEEE President.

Industrial Extension Service

Terri Helmlinger Ratcliff is featured in the book Changing Our World:  True Stories of Women Engineer, McGraw-Hill, March 2006.

Margaret O’Brien, Academy of Outstanding Faculty Engaged in Extension, NC State University.

James W. Leach, named the Endowed Progress Energy Faculty Fellow.

Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Jon-Paul Maria, Faculty Early Career Development Award, National Science Foundation.

Hans H. Stadelmaier, 2006 ASM Albert Easton White Distinguished Teacher Award, ASM International.

MSE Students

Amit Y. Desai, a 2006 Tau Beta Pi award ($10,000 to support his first year of graduate education), professional organization of Tau Beta Pi; named a 2006 Goldwater Scholar; and is a finalist for the British Marshall and Gates-Cambridge Scholarships.

Miscellaneous

F. Orion Pozo, NCSU Libraries, Collection Manager for Engineering, the 2002 Homer I. Bernhardt Distinguished Service Award, American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).

Engineering Graduate Research Center renamed as the Larry K. Monteith Engineering Research Center, October 2005, to honor Monteith as former chancellor and former dean of engineering.
