Two NC State computer science professors have been awarded a research grant to pursue their work in optical burst switched networks. Dr. George Rouskas and Dr. Harry G. Perros, both professors in the Department of Computer Science, have had their joint proposal funded for $327,000 from the Intelligence Technology Innovation Center for the Jumpstart project. The award will run from January 2003 to December 2004.
For the project Rouskas and Perros plan to design and implement protocols for OBS networks that will be deployed eventually in the multi-wavelength Advanced Technology Demonstrations Network (ATDNet) testbed in the Washington, DC, area. This is a joint project with the Microelectronics Center of North Carolina (MCNC).
According to Rouskas, Optical burst switching is widely considered a disruptive technology with the potential to revolutionize the telecommunications field. Our work at NC State on the Jumpstart burst switching signaling protocol was the first to develop accurate models for this new technology and to demonstrate its advantages.
Rouskas received his diploma in computer science from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, in 1989, and his master’s and doctorate in computer science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1991 and 1994, respectively. His research interests include lightwave wavelength division multiplexing networks, multicast communication and scheduling.
Perros received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Athens University, Greece, in 1970, his diploma in data processing from the Greek Center of Productivity in 1970, his master’s degree in operational research with computing from Leeds University, England, in 1971 and his doctorate in operations research from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, in 1975. His research interests include optical networks and optical burst switching.
