Dr. Jagdish “Jay” Narayan of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at North Carolina State University has been named the John C. C. Fan Family Distinguished Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, effective May 1. The endowed professorship is named after Dr. Fan, a Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology educated pioneer in solid state electronics, who is founder and Chief Executive Officer of Massachusetts-based multinational Kopin Corporation.
Narayan joined the NC State faculty in 1984 after working as a senior scientist and group leader for Oak Ridge National Laboratory for 12 years. He is a life member and fellow of the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society; a life member and fellow of the American Physical Society and the National Academy of Sciences of India; a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; and a fellow of the American Society for Metals International/American Society for Materials. He was recently honored with an American Society for Materials Gold Medal and the Campbell Prize of the American Society for Metals International.
He has published more than 800 scientific papers, received 20 patents and edited nine books. Narayan has graduated more than 50 master’s and doctoral students and teaches two graduate courses on the NTU network.
Narayan received his bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, India, in 1969, his master’s degree in 1970 and his doctorate in 1971 from the University of California, Berkeley, all in materials science and engineering.
