NC State A Winner in Micro-Truck Baja 2002 Competition

The NC State Micro-Truck, surrounded by its awards, is displayed in the College of Engineering’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Robert E. Hughes and Keith A. Sanders, master’s students in mechanical engineering at NC State University, won third place in the Micro-Truck Baja 2002 competition held by the Society of Automotive Engineers and sponsored by DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Company, General Motors and Thompson Ramo Wooldridge Company. The race was held November 19 in Detroit.

Dr. Eric C. Klang, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at NC State, and Dr. M. K. Ramasubramanian, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and director of the mechatronics program at NC State, were faculty advisors and provided resources for the project.

The first and second places went to Carnegie-Mellon University teams. According to Hughes, “Our vehicle did the lap in 30 seconds, and the first place entry did it in 26 seconds.” The NC State team won the only overall design excellence award presented. Hughes and Sanders received the two prizes, plaques and prize money.

This competition has been held for many years, but this is the first year NC State has participated.
