Nuttle and Smith Named IIE Fellows

Two faculty members in the Department of Industrial Engineering at NC State University have been named Fellows of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE). Dr. Henry L. W. Nuttle, emeritus professor of industrial engineering, and Clarence L. Smith, lecturer and assistant department head of industrial engineering, were recognized for their distinguished service and leadership qualities at the IIE Annual Conference in Atlanta May 15.

Nuttle, who joined the College of Engineering faculty in 1966, serves as director of graduate programs in industrial engineering. His research interests include modeling and decision support for textile and apparel manufacturing and the application of operations research to problems in production planning, scheduling and control. He received his doctoral degree from the John Hopkins University in 1968.

Smith (BSIE ’69, MSIE ’83) has been a lecturer of industrial engineering at NC State since 1978 and the assistant head of industrial engineering since 1984. From 1978 to 1984, he also served as the department’s extension specialist. He is the past director of the IIE Work Methods and Methods Engineering Division and is the institute’s 1991 Phil Carroll Award winner for his contributions in the fields of work measurement and methods engineering.

No more than 20 IIE Fellows can be named each year. The Department of Industrial Engineering at NC State currently has nine fellows of the IIE.
