College of Engineering Announces 2006 Awards for Excellence

The College of Engineering at North Carolina State University announced the 2006 Awards for Excellence at a recognition ceremony held March 15 in Mann Hall. Dr. Nino A. Masnari, dean of the College of Engineering, and Dr. Richard F. Keltie, associate dean for academic affairs, presented awards to Sandra Bailey, Richard Duckworth and Lisa Marshall.

Bailey, student services assistant for the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, was nominated for her exceptional organizational skills and creative improvements to the recruiting process. Duckworth, post award officer in the Office of Research Administration, was nominated for his innovative use of databases for tracking grants and proposals and his dedication to the college. Marshall, director for outreach programs in the Department of Nuclear Engineering, was nominated for her outstanding leadership and her outreach to teachers and students.

As the director for outreach programs in the Department of Nuclear Engineering, Lisa Marshall serves as the academic adviser to all nuclear engineering freshmen and works with the undergraduate administrator on outreach and student recruitment. She co-directs the annual Young Scholars Summer Program in Nuclear Science and Technology and the annual Science Teachers Workshop on Nuclear Sciences. Lisa also coordinates nuclear engineering events and provides in-class presentations for high school students.

Lisa is an enthusiastic ambassador for the department, constantly seeking new opportunities to educate others and form new partnerships. For example, a presentation she developed is currently used in science classrooms to introduce nuclear science to students. She has increased interactions among students, alumni and industry; served on national ASEE committees; and worked closely with teaching associations.

Lisa is an outstanding individual whose leadership benefits students across the state.

As student services assistant for the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Sandra Bailey is intricately involved with the recruitment and progress of the department's graduate students. While recruiting week is filled with complex challenges, Sandra ensures that the events are trouble-free. Employing her exceptional organizational skills, she has introduced many innovative solutions to the challenges of recruiting outstanding graduate students. She manages regular communication with recruits, organizes applications, and ensures smooth transition into the graduate program. One of her most creative improvements to the recruiting process is the involvement of current graduate students with potential recruits. This innovation gives students a unique perspective and adds a level of enthusiasm to the process.

Sandra's pleasant, outgoing personality and empathetic style help shepherd students through the program, encouraging them to succeed. Her efforts are considered essential to the operation of the department's graduate program.



Richard Duckworth

Richard Duckworth has held three different positions since joining the Office of Research Administration five years ago. He was contract manager, then information processing technician, and recently he was promoted to post award officer.

An innovator, Richard has used his database expertise to create and maintain seven databases that help the college monitor and review more than 800 proposals and more than 1,200 active grants each year. By creating these databases, Richard has helped safeguard the present and future funding of research projects in the college.

A constant trainer and educator, Richard works with faculty and staff to keep them informed of the changes in research administration, and he offers training and help with the Project Information Navigation System (PINS) and the Research Administration Data and Reports (RADAR).

Richard is known for his dedication to the college and for his drive for perfection. He has been instrumental in helping the research office become a model for other colleges on campus.
