The Senior Design Center (SDC) in the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University will hold a reception on Thursday, August 25, from 3 to 5 p.m. to celebrate a student team victory in the sixth annual IEEE Computer Society International Design Competition (CSIDC) World Finals held in June.

Mentored by Dr. Robert J. Fornaro, professor of computer science and director of the SDC, Margaret R. Heil, associate director of the SDC, and Dr. Richard A. Lancia, Alumni Distinguished Professor and coordinator of the Fisheries and Wildlife Program in the Department of Forestry, the student team was the first from the United States to win this competition since it began six years ago. Their project, “NEAT: Networks for Endangered Animal Tracking,”combines GPS technology and wireless sensor networks to track animal movements in the wild. During the reception, starting at 3:15, the multidisciplinary team will repeat the presentation that earned them their CSIDC win.

Team members are David Coblentz (BSCSC ’05), Dakota Hawkins (BSCSC ’05), Jonathan Lewis (BSCSC ’05) and Ben Noffsinger (junior, Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences). Coblentz and Lewis are returning to NC State in the fall as graduate students in computer science.

The reception will be held in the Walnut Room of the Talley Student Center on the NC State campus. Provost Larry A. Nielsen will deliver opening remarks.

Media representatives are invited to attend the reception.
