- from NC State Alumni Association News

[College of Engineering Editor’s note: release was truncated to indicate only Engineering recipients]

As one of its strategic goals, the NC State Alumni Association seeks to highlight the academic excellence of our alma mater. During the past 30 years, the Alumni Association has developed one of the most prestigious programs in the country to honor excellence in teaching, research, extension and outreach. This year, the association will disburse more than $67,000 in recognition of NC State’s outstanding faculty.

As the cornerstone of this program, the Alumni Distinguished Professorship honors the "best of the best" in undergraduate and graduate instruction. The undergraduate awards were established in 1968, and the graduate awards followed in 1983. With each of these awards, the professor receives a $3,000 stipend for two years.

Among the 2003 Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professors was

*Paul D. Franzon, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

The Alumni Outstanding Research Awards were first presented in 1981. These awards provide a onetime stipend of $3,000 to each awardee. This year, the Alumni Association was able to increase the stipend from $2,000 to $3,000 with monetary assistant from John Gilligan, vice chancellor for research and graduate studies. The nomination and selection process is handled by Gilligan’s office. Faculty who make significant advances in their field of study are eligible for this award.

Among this year’s Alumni Outstanding Research Awards recipients was

*George Rouskas, Department of Computer Science

The Alumni Outstanding Outreach and Extension Awards, established in 1978, provide a onetime stipend of $2,000 to each awardee. The nomination and selection process is handled by the office of Stephen Jones, vice chancellor for extension and engagement. Extension agents and specialists who make an extraordinary effort to bring research and technology to the people and businesses of North Carolina are eligible.

Among the 2003 Alumni Outstanding Teacher awardees was

*Gianluca Lazzi, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
