Wilson Technical Community College

Project

Wilson Technical Community College replaced their mail delivery truck with a Global Electric Motorcar.

On the Road to Success

Alternative Fuel Vehicle Technologywilson tech impact by the numbers

  • As the recipient of an Alternative Fuel Incentive Project award, Wilson Technical Community College is quickly approaching President Dr. Rusty Stephens’ longtime goal of becoming a more energy efficient campus by replacing a mail minivan with a GEM.
  • The college’s 2005 Global Electric Motorcar runs entirely on electric power. They are working to install a solar charging station on a campus building, so the GEM can be powered by renewable energy.
  • GEMs, or Global Electric Motorcars, are low-speed zero-emission vehicles designed to replace petroleum-fueled vehicles for short trips in an effort to reduce air pollution. GEMs are street legal on roads with speed limits up to 35 mph, and can be plugged into 110-volt  electrical outlets.
  • "It will replace the current aging minivan as our primary mail and local delivery vehicle. In the meantime we have been driving it around the campus and metered the first complete charging at only 38 cents." – Rusty Stephens
  • The GEM vehicle is available for local demonstrations, and the installation of the solar charging station will allow students from many different fields to participate in this exciting learning experience.

  • Other changes at the college include energy efficient lighting, highly-insulated buildings, and Falcon Waterfree urinals on campus. The college is conducting a wind power study and beginning construction of a "green" LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) building.
