On the Road to Success

Alternative Fuel Technology

  • Superior Oil Company of Salisbury used funds from the Alternative Fuel Incentive Project to eliminate the extra cost of biodiesel blended fuel as compared to petroleum diesel. With the help of the Solar Center grant, Superior Oil's Penn Mart station (1600 South Main St. in Salisbury) was able to sell B20 biodiesel for the same price as petroleum diesel.

  • B20 is a blended fuel, 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent petroleum diesel, which can be used in any diesel vehicle without modification. Biodiesel is non-toxic and biodegradable, and its use, even in blended form, results in significantly reduced pollutant emissions.
  • When the station switched a petroleum diesel pump to B20 back in the fall of 2004, it became only the fourth station in the state to offer B20 to the public. superior oil pump
  • Diesel-powered vehicles owned and operated by the City of Salisbury are serving as the anchor fleet for their B20 fueling site. Station owners note the importance of being able to offer the cleaner fuel at a competitive price. "The project was very successful," said Superior Oil President Steve Jarrett. "People were and are very interested in a cleaner environment but not at a higher price in today's price hikes.
