Pitt County Memorial Hospital
Project
Pitt County Memorial Hospital installed a biodiesel fueling station and
runs all of their diesel vehicles on B20.
On the Road to Success
Alternative Fuel Technology
- Pitt County Memorial Hospital
has set a new standard for dedication to clean energy for our nation's
hospitals by becoming the first US hospital to install a biodiesel
fueling station.
- The construction of this
station was funded through support from the NC Soybean Producers
Association, with Alternative Fuel Incentive Project funds assisting
with the purchase of biodiesel fuel.
- With the addition of the
fueling station, the hospital's 35 diesel vehicles, including
ambulances, are now powered by B20.
- B20 is a blended fuel,
composed of 20% biodiesel fuel and 80% petroleum diesel. B20 can be
used in any diesel-powered vehicle without any modification or special
maintenance. Biodiesel is a biodegradable fuel and its use, even in
blended form, results in significantly reduced pollutant emissions.

- Exhaust from biodiesel fuel
is non-toxic and
non-carcinogenic, as opposed to exhaust from petroleum diesel. Hospital
executives are confident that the switch to this cleaner burning fuel
will not only enable the vehicle fleet to run efficiently but will also
lower the level of harmful pollutants in the air.
- "More than half of the
patients at PCMH come from outside Pitt County, many of them arriving
by ambulance," said Dave McRae, chief executive officer of University
Health Systems of Eastern Carolina
at the pump's dedication, "So keeping our emergency transport vehicles
running cleanly and efficiently is critical in providing reliable
health services to our residents."
