The City of Greensboro
Project
The City of Greensboro utilizes B20 in their refuse and maintenance
vehicles.
On the Road to Success

Alternative Fuel Technology
- The City of Greensboro was the recipient of one of the Solar Center's ten
Alternative Fuel Incentive Project grants awarded in 2004, which was
used to help pay for the cost difference between B20 biodiesel and
petroleum diesel.
- Grant funds were used to
purchase fuel for the city's landfill fueling site which dispenses B20
fuel to more than 80 refuse trucks
and off-road vehicles used for
landfill maintenance.
- B20 is a blended fuel,
composed of 20% biodiesel fuel and 80% petroleum diesel. B20 can be used in any diesel-powered vehicle without modification or
special maintenance. Biodiesel is non-toxic and biodegradable, and its use, even in blended form,
results in reduced pollutant
emissions.
- Between the landfill fueling
site and their Service Center, the City of Greensboro consumes about
800,000 gallons of B20 annually.
- The availability of B20 at
the landfill fueling site has allowed two local universities,
UNC-Greensboro and NC A&T, to purchase biodiesel fuel from the city
for their own diesel vehicles
- The City of Greensboro has
been named by the US Department of Energy as recipient of a National
Partner Award in recognition of its dedication to the use of
alternative fuels. Awards and grants such as these have allowed the
city to promote the use of biodiesel in the local media and to
participate in educational activities for schools and civic
groups.
