Buncombe County
Project
Buncombe County General Services, which manages the county's automotive
and truck fleet, has constructed a biodiesel fueling center.
On the Road to Success
Alternative Fuel Technology
- The new fueling center,
located on Hominy Creek Road near
the Farmers' Market in Asheville,
will provide fleet vehicles with easy access to cleaner fuel in a
county where there are currently no biodiesel fueling stations.
- The new station will dispense
B20, or blended biodiesel fuel.
- B20 can be used in any
diesel-powered vehicle without any modification or special maintenance.
Biodiesel is non-toxic and biodegradable, and its use, even in blended
form, results in significantly reduced pollutant emissions.
- There are currently 29
diesel-powered vehicles in the county's fleet, all of which will be
fueling up with B20. These vehicles consume an average of 84,700
gallons of fuel each year.
- Although the county's diesel
vehicles are the anchor fleet for the site, the station is accessible
to other local government agencies as part of the county's effort to
facilitate the expansion of biofuel use in the area.
- A diesel fueling site at the
county landfill is also making the switch to B20, and General Services
managers hope to expand their fleets with the purchase of new
Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFVs).
- The use of AFIP grant funds
to construct the new biodiesel fueling station demonstrates the
county's ongoing commitment to working for a cleaner and healthier
environment.
