Green Building Verification Assistance
The Solar Center is the administrator of the NC HealthyBuilt Homes (HBH) Program, the State of North Carolina’s residential green building program established in 2003. HBH provides a certificate for homes meeting "green home guidelines" built by residential builders who practice sustainable, high performance building strategies making the home a comfortable, healthy and affordable place that reduces energy and water usage, promotes renewable energy use and helps protect the land where the home is built. The program is designed to be achievable at reasonable cost by affordable housing programs.
The Center is also a LEED for Homes provider for North Carolina and surrounding states, as designated by the US Green Buildings Council (US GBC). LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a national program which is seen by the licensed architects and engineers as the market leader in green building verification.
The HealthyBuilt Homes and the LEED for Homes programs both offer a green inspector/ rater designation for HERS raters (Energy Star Homes raters) which allows the HERS rater to offer HBH and LEED for Homes guidance and field inspections as a service to home builders while providing quality control and assurance. The Solar Center offers the required classroom and field training needed for an individual to achieve these designations. Independent green inspectors will play a key role in the continued growth of green building verification programs and are a great example of the growing green collar workforce in the state.
Along with the residential program, the Solar Center works with its many partners to provide technical assistance to developers seeking LEED certification of commercial and institutional buildings through in-depth design reviews, leading design charrettes and technical training for building professionals.
