Vouk named Distinguished Professor of Computer Science

Dr. Mladen A. Vouk, head of the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University and founding director of the NC State Data Science Initiative, has been named as a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science by Dr. Louis Martin-Vega, dean of the College of Engineering.

Vouk has been a part of the NC State faculty for more than 30 years, and recently finished serving a term as interim vice chancellor for research, innovation and economic development.

His primary research interests are in high-assurance systems and clouds, software reliability and security engineering, advanced learning technologies, data sciences and analytics, and scientific computing workflows.

Vouk co-invented the pioneering NC State’s Virtual Computing Laboratory (VCL) cloud solution and served as the founding co-director of the Computer Science Software Systems and Engineering Laboratory and of the NC State Multimedia and Networking Laboratory. He also served as technical director of the NC State Center for Advanced Computing and Communication.

Vouk is an associated faculty member of NC State’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and of the Joint NC State/UNC Department of Biomedical Engineering. He is a member of NC State’s bioinformatics, genomics and operations research faculties.

Vouk earned his Ph.D. at King’s College, London. He has authored/co-authored more than 300 publications. He is an IEEE Fellow (2001) and an IEEE Computer Society Golden Core Member (2011). He has received numerous awards, including the IFIP Silver Core Award (1992), the RAMS Alan O. Plait Award for Tutorial Excellence (1999), the IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Service Award (2010), the IBM Faculty Award (2010, 2011 and 2012), and the Robyn Render Endeavor Award (2013).
