Camp II: June 29 - July 2, 2009 (rising 6th and 7th) WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER 2009 Thank you so much for your interest in the NC State University Engineering Summer Programs. We had an overwhelming response again this year and our applications have far exceeded the number of camp slots available! Therefore, we will not be accepting any additional applications and will not add names to our wait list. Please keep us in mind as you plan for next summer. We will update our website before the winter holidays with Summer 2010 camp dates and application information. FOR SUMMER 2009 APPLICANTS For students who submitted the electronic application and all necessary documents by the March 31st deadline, we are currently in the process of reviewing applications. Students will receive acceptance or wait list notifications via conventional mail by the end of April. ![]()
The NC State College of Engineering will be offering two, week-long, non-residential summer day camps for middle school students (rising 6th through rising 9th). The camps will take place on NC State's campus in Raleigh and will be led by middle school teachers in partnership with engineering faculty and students from NC State. Since the camp is non-residential, most students attend from the local area. However, we have had students travel from as far as Canada, Michigan and California. These students generally are staying with extended family who live locally, but some families have chosen to travel to Raleigh for the week of camp. Please contact us if you would like suggestions for local and campus accommodations. Camp Details: * Application Period: February 1st - March 31st * Lunch will be provided each day; * Camp hours are approximately 8 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Thursday; * Camp fee: $250 (a limited number of need-based scholarships are available). Application Procedure: 1- Fill out electronic application (link at bottom of page), and 2- Send the following together by conventional mail. All materials must be received no later than March 31st, 2009 in order for the student to be considered:
The student will receive a postcard by mail when all of the above materials have been received. Student Selection: Only students who submit a complete application by the above-listed deadline will be considered for camp. Approximately 50-55 students will be selected for each campI. We consider a number of factors in selecting attendees from the pool of applicants. We rely heavily on the teacher recommendation and the student statement to make decisions. We also select students from a cross-section of backgrounds and geographic areas and invite students who may be interested in engineering, but have little or no background, as well as students who already have some previous experiences. Application date can play a small role when all other factors are equal. Accepted students will be notified before the end of April if they have been accepted to the camp or placed on a waitlist. Scholarship Request Letter: Scholarships can be requested for need based students. Since we do not wish to receive personal financial information from families, we rely on the school to indicate to us if a family has demonstrated need. Generally, participation in the free and reduced lunch program is an indicator, but a school counselor or other school official may be able to speak to other factors influencing financial need. For homeschooled students, parents should write the letter for the scholarship request indicating factors influencing financial need without providing specific financial information. Please submit this letter with the other components of the application. Recommendation Letter: (link to recommendation request letter) The recommendation letter should be written by a teacher or other school official and speak on behalf of the student. The letter should address the student's interests and abilities, as well as the student's character and suitability for attending the camp. Home school students may choose another adult who interacts with the student regularly and can speak to her/his abilities, interests, character, and suitability for attending camp.
