Needs and Opportunities

Annual Unrestricted Gifts

One of the College's greatest needs is additional unrestricted support.  In past years, the dean has allocated almost $500,000 annually from the general fund to freshman merit scholarships and supplemental graduate fellowships. There are many other scholarship and operating needs that are not being met.

The Dean's Circle was created to recognize and honor donors who have contributed to this priority. All donors of annual unrestricted gifts of $1,000 or more made payable to the NC State Engineering Foundation, Inc., are recognized in the Dean's Circle and invited to the annual College of Engineering Leadership Dinner.  In addition, Dean's Circle gifts count toward membership in the university's Chancellor's Circle and Lifetime Giving Societies.

Checks should be made payable to the NC State Engineering Foundation, Inc., and mailed to Campus Box 7901, Raleigh, NC 27695.  Call (919) 515-7458 for credit card gifts by phone, or give now online.

Endowment

The College of Engineering at NC State lags behind many of its peers in total endowment. This limits our ability to attract and retain the best students and faculty and to take advantage of emerging opportunities. Increased endowed faculty support and endowed fellowships are among the greatest needs.

Giving to the Endowment

An endowment creates long-term financial stability, allowing the College of Engineering at NC State to be less dependent on more unpredictable sources of revenue, such as annual research sponsorship and state government aid. The recently concluded Campaign for NC State Students greatly increased the endowed funds for scholarships and fellowships available to the College.

An endowment is created through the establishment of a permanent fund that is invested and managed. A portion of the annual income generated (currently 4%) is used to carry out the donor's designated purpose. Income earned in excess of the annual amount spent less an administrative fee (0.75%) is added back into the endowment so that it continues to grow and maintain its purchasing power for future generations.

Endowment gifts provide many opportunities to merge our donors' interests with the needs and objectives of the College of Engineering at NC State. In order to guarantee that the income from an endowment will be sufficient to achieve the donor's goals, minimum support levels have been established. Following are just a few of the categories and minimum support levels for endowments:

Endowed Faculty Support

The College of Engineering at NC State has hired more than 90 new faculty members since 1996 due to retirements and new positions in emerging areas like biomedical engineering. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded 62 Presidential and Career Awards to NC State Engineering faculty (25 since 2000). In addition, three faculty members have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering since 1996. Attracting and retaining the best faculty is our priority and is critical to the quality of an NC State Engineering education.

Endowed Chair:

Minimum $2,500,000

Endowed Professorship:

Minimum $1,000,000

Endowed Student Support

In-state tuition and fees for full-time undergraduates in 2004-2005 total more than $4,300. The out-of-state student rates total more than $16,000. As tuition rates continue to rise, endowed scholarship support becomes more critical to our ability to attract and retain the best students.

The NC State Engineering Foundation currently manages more than $17,000,000 in endowed scholarship funds exclusively for students enrolled in the College of Engineering at NC State. These funds generate about $700,000 annually, which is used to award more than 350 scholarships averaging $2,000 each.

There are currently more than 5,500 undergraduates enrolled in the College of Engineering, meaning only 6% of students receive endowed scholarship awards. Fewer than 14% of engineering students receive scholarship assistance of any kind from the College. Attracting and retaining the best students is critical to the quality of our programs.

Graduate Fellowship:

Minimum $300,000

In-state Undergraduate Full Tuition Scholarship:
