Summer Reading 2009
The University’s summer reading this year is Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. This book describes many of the experiences of Greg Mortenson as he kept his promise to build schools in the high country of Pakistan and Afghanistan after his failed attempt to reach the summit of Pakistan's K2, the world’s second highest mountain. Mortenson learned much about life and much about himself through these experiences. Read the book and talk about it with your family and friends. You’ll be discussing it with your fellow First Year Engineering students and your E101 instructor this year, as well as doing an assignment for your E101 class.
You can pick up your copy at the NCSU Bookstore on Dunn Avenue. All you need to provide is your name and student ID number.
Greg Mortenson will be the guest speaker at NC State’s Wolfpack Welcome Week Convocation Festival. The Convocation Festival is Monday, August 17, 7 p.m., at the RBC Center. Although First Year Engineering students are not required to attend, you are strongly encouraged to do so to hear a first-hand account of Greg’s experiences. (This event is not to be confused with the College of Engineering Welcome, which is scheduled for Thursday, August 20, and is required for all First Year Engineering students.)
Your assignment for E101 will NOT be posted here as formerly announced during New Student Orientation. Rather, you will receive your assignment from your E101 instructor a few weeks into the semester. The assignment will not be due until much later in the semester. This will allow you, your classmates, and your instructor to discuss more about engineering and problem solving prior to completing the assignment, and provide you with a better opportunity to relate the content of the book to the aspects of engineering that you will discuss in class. You are still encouraged to complete the reading of the book prior to your first E101 class meeting and to attend the Convocation Festival to hear Greg Mortenson speak. All further information about your summer reading assignment will be posted on the class web site for your particular section of E101.
