The First Year Engineering Program (FYE) is where all newly admitted first-year students in the College of Engineering begin their careers. The NC State College of Engineering is the second largest in the United States based on graduation, and graduation begins with a successful first year.
In the summer prior to fall classes, students are required to attend New Student Orientation, two important days that launch the activities of the first year and begin the student's transition to college life. At orientation, each prospective engineering student registers for classes in a common first year, which includes two engineering-specific classes, E101: Introduction to Engineering and E115: Introduction to Computing Environments. Of course, the student's course schedule can vary depending on placement scores and other preparatory work accomplished.
When the fall semester begins, students attend a College Welcome event featuring talks by the Dean of Engineering and a distinguished alum. Another important event for students in their first year is the annual Freshman Engineering Design Day, an exciting day of E101 project team demonstrations.
All students in the First Year Engineering Program are assigned an academic advisor based on intended major. When students complete the program, they are expected to matriculate into one of the 18 engineering degree programs.
