Academic Departments
The College of Engineering at NC State University offers 18 bachelor's, 17 master's and 13 doctoral degree programs through 9 academic departments, 3 affiliated academic departments in other colleges, the Integrated Manufacturing Systems Engineering Institute (IMSEI) and the Operations Research Program. Seven of the master's degrees are offered both on campus in the traditional setting and off campus through distance education. The Master of Engineering is offered exclusively through distance education.
Our academic departments are organized by engineering disciplines: biological engineering; biomedical engineering; chemical and biomolecular engineering; civil, construction, and environmental engineering; computer science; electrical and computer engineering; industrial and systems engineering; materials science and engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering; paper science and engineering; textile engineering; and nuclear engineering.
While our departments are organized by engineering disciplines, our faculty and students benefit from our emphasis on key cross-disciplinary thrust areas, including bioengineering, nanotechnology, information and communications technology, critical infrastructure, transportation and logistics, energy and environmental systems, advanced materials and manufacturing, robotics and sensor technology and service systems engineering. Many faculty and students perform research in these key areas from the perspective of their own engineering disciplines; others form teams of faculty and students from various departments, both within and outside the College, to participate in multidisciplinary research projects.
