Dr. Jacob L. Jones, professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and director of the Analytical Instrumentation Facility at North Carolina State University, has been named a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS).

This honor recognizes ACerS members who have distinguished themselves through outstanding contributions to the ceramic arts or sciences, broad and productive scholarship in ceramic science and technology, conspicuous achievement in ceramic industry or by outstanding service to the Society.

Jones’ research interests are in X-ray and neutron scattering, ceramic materials and mechanical behavior of materials. Along with being the director of the Analytical Instrumentation Facility (AIF), he also leads a research group that is focused on using in situ X-ray and neutron scattering methods to study real-time, processing-structure-property relationships of materials, which then lead to more intelligent design of materials and materials processes.

Jones has published more than 125 papers and has received many research awards including a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award, a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the IEEE Ferroelectrics Young Investigator Award, a National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Defense Program Award of Excellence, the International Educator of the Year award from the University of Florida (UF) International Center, a UF-HHMI Science for Life Distinguished Mentor Award for his mentoring of undergraduate researchers and two Edward C. Henry “Best Paper” awards from the Electronics Division of the American Ceramic Society.

Jones received a B.S. in mechanical engineering (1999), an M.S. in mechanical engineering (2001), and Ph.D. in materials engineering (2004), all from Purdue University.

Jones will be recognized for this honor at the ACerS Honors and Awards Banquet at the 117th Annual Meeting of the American Ceramic Society in Columbus, Ohio on Monday, October 5, 2015.
